Build the brand backward

Everyone wants to talk about the logo. None of it matters if you don't know where you're going.

Everybody wants to talk about the logo. The colors. The font. Cute. None of it matters if you don't know where you're going.

A brand isn't your paint job. It's the promise of a destination — and you can't promise a place you've never pictured.

Most owners build forward. They start with what they can do this quarter and let goals pile up like junk mail. Five years later they've got a busy company pointed nowhere. Motion, not direction.

Build backward instead. Stand in the business three years out — the one that runs without you bleeding for it. How big? Who's on the team? What does a Tuesday feel like? Get specific enough to taste it.

Does this get me closer to the mountain, or not? That's the only question that matters.

Now walk it back. If that's the mountain, what has to be true one year out? One quarter? This week? Your goals stop being wishes and become a staircase — each step earning the next.

A guy I knew set a goal to "grow revenue." Vague. We changed it to a number tied to a business he could leave for two weeks without his phone exploding. Suddenly every decision had a judge. That's the why, not a poster on the wall, but the reason you'll say no to good opportunities pointed the wrong way.
